TSVANTSIK YORN

SLOVAK KLEZMER ASSOCIATION & REAL MUSIC HOUSE, 2015

The ensemble Preßburger Klezmer Band has released a new album titled Tsvantsik Yorn. With this release, the band celebrates 20 years on the music scene—a milestone also reflected in the album’s title, which means “20 years” in Yiddish. The album features 14 tracks.

As with their previous album Tants Mit Mir (2012), production was handled by Robert Pospiš and Martin Sillay. The band recorded almost the entire studio album live. “Unlike the previous album, which was more of a collaboration with well-known international musicians, this time the driving force of the album is the band itself. Compared to our other recordings, Tsvantsik Yorn differs mainly in that it explores more original musical ideas,” explained violinist Andrej Werner.

The musicians enriched the traditional genre with exotic influences. “From Armenia, through Eastern Europe with a stopover in New York, all the way to Brazil. The Armenian songs were arranged and performed by Yerevan-born, outstanding singer and composer Karine Sarkisjan. We also present several unique klezmer melodies from Slovakia, including combinations with Goralské polkas. There are several Yiddish songs as well, thanks to Latvian singer Sasha Lurje, along with a few songs from today’s Satu Mare and Maramureș. A surprise will be the Wedding Samba combined with klezmer traditionals, as well as two original compositions by members of the band,” Werner described the album’s musical diversity.
